Hestakráin

A quiet, quaint place with a real sense of character. If you’d rather be among fields, horses and wildflowers than crowds of tourists, stay here for a night or two.

There were no cooking facilities, and the nearest restaurant was 18 km away. The advertised bar was closed both nights we stayed.

The open fields and streams around the plot made the scenery beautiful, and it was amazing to meet the horses up close. They’re very well looked after. I got to walk around, interact with them, sit on one and feed one. You can also book a scenic ride on the iconic Icelandic Horse, known for its 5 gates, but I hadn’t told my tour company in advance, so I missed the chance.

The staff were really friendly and made us feel at home. Our clean room looked out toward Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, on one side of the building, and the outdoor hot tub and sauna shared the same lovely view. Breakfast was ample, including waffles, and lunch and dinner were hearty. Lovely guesthouse and hotel. Horseback riding on the fantastic islandic horses is a must when you are at Hestakrain!
