Blue House B&B

We spent our first night in Reykjavík at this B&B and were put in the neighbouring building. The place was well kept and the service was great. Their WhatsApp forecast and alert group was a highlight. It helped us catch the Northern Lights, which we could even see from the garden. A perfect start to our holiday.

I wouldn’t recommend this place. There are much better apartments in the city we stayed in, unless you’re on a budget and willing to rough it. The property is called “The Blue House” on booking platforms, but seems to include several different places. The photos here mix in pictures of ANOTHER property down the road that belongs to them. That’s the one we checked into, and it was an ABSOLUTE DISAPPOINTMENT. It didn’t look like the photos, which felt like a lie. The place wasn’t well kept, and hygiene and cleanliness were poor, not just dated. The floor was dirty, the pots were wet, and the forks and spoons seemed random. The kitchen was tiny. The TV and fixtures didn’t work. The toilet bowl was dirty UNDER the seat cover, and the bathroom was incredibly small with nowhere to put toiletries. Hot water took 15 MINUTES to warm up in winter. There was NO BODY SOAP, only an empty, broken dispenser. The towels were dark and looked questionably clean; the bedsheets also looked a bit stained and yellow. The freezer compartment was completely iced over and unusable. I can understand a budget place, but hosting should still involve basic integrity, especially around cleanliness and making sure things work. Sorry, no pictures. I didn’t bother taking any.

The Blue House has a peaceful, kind, and authentic feel, with people who made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Our room was comfortable, tastefully decorated, and thoughtfully maintained. It felt like a good place to relax, work, or explore, with a nice mix of comfort and charm. The staff were kind, attentive, and ready to help. They clearly take pride in their work and in the experience they offer. I had a wonderful stay, and it left me feeling inspired and renewed. We stayed at this really nice hostel for two separate nights and were very happy with it. The staff were super friendly, gave us lots of tips, and made pancakes one morning. It was clean, quiet, and conveniently located near the best place in Reykjavik to see the northern lights. We took the bus sometimes and walked at other times to reach the center. The bus is reliable, and the walk is lovely. I’d definitely stay again.
