The main drawback is how far out of the way it is. It’s about a 45-minute walk to central Reykjavik, and even with bus links you have to walk 10 minutes to the nearest stop, then ride another 10-15 minutes into town. If you want to stay right in the heart of the city, this may feel too remote. I spent a week in a mixed dorm. It was clean and surprisingly quiet, and never full during my stay. For a few nights I had the whole room to myself, which was a nice bonus. I chatted with a few people but mostly kept to myself. It’s good value if you’re fine with the extra travel time and want a quiet, clean place to crash.

I arrived around 5am, and the kitchen staff let me wait in the restaurant until check-in at 2pm. When I went for a walk around 9am, the young lady at the counter kept an eye on my bag. They ended up checking me in around 10am, which was great. The place was pretty dirty when I arrived on the weekend, but things got cleaned up once everyone was back at work on Monday. The staff were friendly, the beds comfortable enough, and blankets and pillows were provided, though not towels. The women’s bathroom had a hair dryer, and the showers and toilets were pretty clean and worked well. Wifi was very good. I met some really cool people I’m still in touch with. I didn’t try breakfast, but I’ve heard good things and it looked great. There’s a little beach-like area a short walk away, lovely for some quiet time if you’re traveling alone. All my tours could pick me up there. Dorms aren’t my favorite, but it was a great experience overall.

The room and shower were clean, but the rest of the place wasn’t as clean. The tables were sticky and the old floor didn’t look very appealing. Keep an eye on your food, ours was taken from the fridge by other tourists. That’s not really the motel’s fault, but it was still very uncool. The road is very noisy, so light sleepers should think twice about staying here. It didn’t bother me, but it’s something to consider. For what it is, it’s fine, I guess.

The room smelled a little off, probably because other guests hung wet clothes or towels in there. Apart from that, it was a great experience. I stayed in a 16-person shared room, which was clean, and the bedding was clean too. Cleaning staff started on the shared kitchen and bathroom around 9:30am. There were utensils and cooking supplies for solo travelers to use, which was nice, and the common areas were comfortable.

The location is a long 45-minute to an hour walk from the main part of the capital, so it’s a great place if you have a rental car too. My SO and I stayed in a unit with three bedrooms, a shared kitchen and bathroom. The rooms were great, and the front desk team of three were patient and forthcoming. Cleaning staff were punctual and quick. The only issue was the roommates, with the usual shared-space annoyances, like leaving a toothbrush on the counter or keeping the bathroom door closed after a really hot shower. All in all, a great place.
