Gerður Apartments

The water had a very strong sulfur smell, which was our one real complaint and something we hadn’t noticed in other parts of the city. Apart from that, we had a great stay. The room in this old building was cozy and comfortable, and the area was quiet while still close to downtown. A grocery store is only a block away. Entry was easy with the information sent beforehand. The kitchen had what we needed, though some items could use an upgrade. The couch could be replaced, and a few more coat hooks would help in weather that calls for coats nearly all the time. We’d definitely stay here again.

We chose an apartment because we planned early starts and long days out, and making breakfast and packed lunches suited us perfectly. The place was clean, cozy, calm, close to the city centre, and had great parking. There’s also a good grocery store nearby. We can’t find anything bad to say and will absolutely rebook. The no-contact check-in worked well: they sent a door code, so there was no waiting in line. It’s an apartment/Airbnb, not a hotel, so expecting daily cleaning doesn’t make sense. And the warm water smells like eggs because of Iceland’s geothermal energy. You’ll notice it at hot springs and around the country while driving or walking. It isn’t sewage or a problem with the apartment. (Google it!) The water is very clean, the cold water has no smell, and it tastes amazing.

The location wasn’t very central, and the walk to downtown was quite a bit. There’s no reception at the property, which wasn’t mentioned on booking sites. You have to call when you arrive to get the code for the front door and your apartment. There’s no housekeeping during the stay either. The room is cleaned before check-in, then no one comes to clean the room, bathroom, kitchen, or lounge, or take away the rubbish. The whole apartment smelled awful, especially the bathroom. The water from the basin and shower tasted really bad, like sewer water. The building’s wooden floors make a lot of noise when people walk around. Laundry is in a shared common room, so you have to share the washer and dryer, and this wasn’t mentioned on booking sites. The apartments were very old, with old beds, shower, toilet, and doors. Absolutely disgusting and not worth a single cent!

The kitchenette was a lovely extra, and having somewhere to store our luggage helped too. Our room was clean and comfortable, with beautiful views. The location worked out perfectly as a midpoint for the things we wanted to see in the lovely city. Takk fyrir!
