Guesthouse Stekkatún

We arrived after 10pm without having told the host, but she was accommodating and left us a note and keys for self check-in. The rooms were a little small, though we didn't need more space. The host was lovely, and breakfast was the standout, with lots of homemade things like smoked salmon, herring, marmalade, rye bread, waffles, cheese, and cold cuts.

We had a lovely stay with Ula, and enjoyed seeing sheep and countryside from the property. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The nearby glacier hike was peaceful and beautiful, and breakfast was super delicious, especially the homemade waffles and jams.

Breakfast was one of the best parts of our Iceland trip. It was amazing, and kept us full until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. The hosts were warm and friendly, the location gorgeous, and even the dog outside was perfect. The place is quaint, comfortable, clean, and quiet, and we'd absolutely recommend it and stay again. I've read some complaints here and don't recognize the place they describe. We found the bedrooms and bathrooms spotless, even along the mattress seams. We're in the countryside, so you might see an occasional gnat. We brought all our luggage into our room and still had plenty of room to move around. It's a guesthouse, not a huge hotel, but bigger than other places we've stayed. The stairs seemed fine to us. As for late check-in, it's a guesthouse, and making noise with suitcases in the hall during quiet hours affects other guests. And for the complaint about breakfast not having bacon and eggs, those aren't the only good breakfast foods. Ian, I also don't understand the complaint about the view.

My stay at Guesthouse Stekkatun was deeply disappointing. I felt unwelcome throughout because the host was rude and unfriendly. I also found bed bugs in my room, which left me with itchy bites and made for a very unpleasant night's sleep. The view didn't match what the online photos had led me to expect; it was underwhelming. With all of that together, this was one of my worst travel experiences, and I strongly advise booking somewhere else.
