Hólmur Farm

The breakfast was great, and the little restaurant had quirky instruments on the walls that were fun to look at. There’s also a glacier tongue behind the property, and they give you directions if you want to drive up to it. It made for a nice start the next morning. It’s a cozy, clean room, and I’m easy to please as long as I have a comfortable bed. The farm is pretty secluded, so getting to restaurants means a bit of a drive, but that’s to be expected in Iceland. I’d read comments calling the host rude, but I didn’t feel that way. Speaking as an American, maybe we’re used to customer service being extra bubbly. The host was direct and not very talkative, but never rude. I’d book here again.

The only thing that bothered us was the strong urine smell in the upstairs bathroom. There are two bathrooms in the farmhouse, and the place also has a small kitchen. We had a very pleasant two-night stay. The owners were lovely, the rooms were clean, and breakfast was a great way to start the day. It’s a cozy, beautiful farm in a remote spot. If you want to eat on the property, book ahead since they get quite busy. Otherwise, bring supplies to cook, as basic utensils are provided.

For somewhere so far from everything, it would make sense to offer dinner or at least something to eat on site. The shared kitchen was neglected and completely bare, with no cups, tea, drinking water, or anything else. And the price really didn’t feel justified. The rooms are simple and the place has an authentic Icelandic farm feel. Breakfast was excellent, with lots of food and plenty of choice. But the host made the stay awful. The service was terrible and the man was very rude, so I’m giving one star. I know Icelanders may not be known for being outgoing or empathetic, but a BnB host should still show basic respect and manners. If having guests around is a bother, maybe this isn’t the right job. Hospitality needs a lot of work here.

The cabin was nice, and we had a good stay at Holmur. Gudrun and Magnus were very kind and helpful, and breakfast was good too.
