I stopped to cool off at this lovely fountain while visiting Assisi, and ended up falling for it. The resemblance I noticed to our surname made it even more special. It dates to 1556-1557, during the papacy of Paul IV, and was built on the order of Assisi’s governor, Marcello Tu

Its inscription mentions convenience, but apparently that didn’t mean you could wash laundry here! The fountain was built from 1556 to 1557 under Paul IV, at the request of Marcello Tuto, the Sienese governor of Assisi.

The drinking water is excellent, and the fountain itself is beautiful, dating from the 16th or 17th century. Its inscription reads: MARCELLVS LVTVS SEN ASSISI ??? SVOP COMMODITATI
