Hotel Sorella Luna

I liked the friendly staff, the perfect location, the excellent breakfast, and our comfortable room. What spoiled it for me was the sofa in junior suite #210. It had been left made up as a child's bed, so it was ugly and impossible to sit on. We booked the suite because we wanted somewhere to read and get ready for the next day, and the sofa would have been just right if it had been left in its original form. That may sound silly, but it's why I gave four stars.

Assisi is beautiful, but this hotel was awful. At reception, getting through the paperwork took over 35 minutes, and they'd reserved three rooms for us even though we'd booked two. Our first room had hairs and eyelashes around the supposedly clean sheets, odd wet spots on the blanket that looked human, and mold in the bathroom and by the air conditioning. I have asthma, so that mold was especially ridiculous. The walls barely blocked sound. We could talk to my parents-in-law through them, and there was noise from other rooms all night. We complained and got moved, but the next room was worse: a huge stain on the blanket that looked like urine, sweat, or semen. Even the receptionist was shocked. They wouldn't give us the suite unless we paid extra. I left the hotel a note with much the same complaints, but I don't know if anyone read it or if a cleaner threw it away. Thankfully, we were only there for one night. Three stars is far too generous; this feels like a hostel. They need to get the cleaning sorted out.

Being so close to the Basilica of St. Francis made it easy for us to visit the church and attend Mass several times. My wife and I stayed three nights, and from room #206 the Umbrian countryside looked lush and peaceful. Waking up to that view was wonderful, and I kept taking pictures.

Stefano and the team were incredibly helpful when a train strike delayed me on travel day. They adjusted to my much later arrival and made sure I reached the hotel safely. My room was clean, and the Basilica of St. Francis is less than a minute away on foot. I'd happily recommend the place. If I could, I'd give the service six stars.
