Residenza Matilde

We wanted a basic, reasonably priced place because we'd rather spend our time out in Rome than in our room. Matilde seemed to fit, but a few things made the stay disappointing. The air conditioning didn't work properly, and the owner's explanation made me think she already knew about the problem. Our first night was awful in the heat, and trying to sleep with a wet towel isn't the basic comfort we were after. The backup mobile AC was very loud, though it got us through nights two and three. When we checked in, the room wasn't ready even though we'd messaged an hour earlier. It only took another 10-15 minutes, but still, that was a letdown. After a day out, we found the room cleaned but the door left wide open. It may have been an oversight, but could have had serious consequences. Thankfully, nothing happened. The room was cleaned on day two but not day three. That didn't bother us much at the time, though it should have, since cleaning was included in what we paid. The house itself looks quite nice and is in a peaceful neighborhood, with plenty of parking nearby. Three days of parking cost about 15€. Bus stops are within walking distance for getting to the city center. With some adjustments and the basics taken care of, Matilde could be a solid place for a couple of days.

A week before my holiday, they cancelled the room I'd booked well in advance and gave me 24h hours to respond. When I phoned, the woman who answered knew nothing about it and spoke very poor English. My room had already been given to someone else, supposedly at a much higher price. The whole town was booked out at that time, so I had to cancel my holiday and take a lot of extra costs.

A cozy place in a quiet area, with a kind and helpful host. Croissants, Nutella, and tea were there every day.

For a quiet, decent place with an Italian feel, this is a good choice. Some of the tourist spots are within reach too.
