At the foot of Baveno, Villa Israël is fully equipped and has several balconies facing Lake Maggiore. It's a lovely place to stay, though the house feels a bit dark. The drive up is steep, at least 12%, and there's a gentle bend at the top that's hard to spot, so I wouldn't recommend arriving for the first time in the dark. You'll need a reasonable level of fitness, too. There is a washing machine, but the power use must stay under 3000 watts, so don't run it at the same time as the kettle.

We spent two wonderful weeks here. The apartment is on a quiet road, with its own entrance and parking, and you reach it by elevator. Inside are three bedrooms, a roomy living area, and a great kitchen and bathroom. There are balconies on both sides. The lake is partly visible from one angle, while the living room has a broad, direct view of Lake Maggiore. Legio Maggiore and a small municipal beach are about a 10-minute walk away, and hiking paths start nearby. The owner lives downstairs, speaks English, and is very friendly and happy to talk about the area. We found the rent good value, and would highly recommend the place.
