Locanda della Maria

We spent three nights here in August with our family of four, staying in the apartment, which had plenty of space. It was clean and well managed, and the staff were so kind and made sure we had what we needed. Thank you, Giovanna! San Giovanni is about a 25-minute walk from busy central Bellagio, so this is a good option if you want something a little more affordable. There’s a ferry stop nearby, though check the schedule, and a bus into town that takes just a few minutes. Those services don’t always run at convenient times, but a taxi is another option.

Giovanna was a lovely host, sharing helpful tips about getting around and the area. The rooms were much more modern and nicely decorated than the photos suggested, and they were spacious and clean. Breakfast had a good range of choices, including freshly baked cake each day for anyone who likes sweets. The location is fine if you’re happy to walk about 20 minutes to Bellagio. Otherwise there’s a small road train from St. Giovanni every 30 minutes for €5, plus buses and ferries from the dock, though the ferries only run at certain times.

The staff are so charming and helpful, and the owner often makes a special cake for breakfast. The meal itself is delicious, and the fresh, lovely linens and sparkling clean rooms show how well cared for this small hotel is. It’s on a quiet little street leading down to the lake, with a neighborhood bar just around the corner. A superb location. Highly recommended!

The location does mean a bit of a trade-off: it’s around a 20-minute walk, or you may have to wait for a crowded bus. Still, I thought the hotel was absolutely worth it and it exceeded our expectations. The rooms were spacious and extremely clean, and Giovanna was a wonderful, helpful host who shared recommendations. The buffet breakfast was nice and complete, and the staff were very friendly.
