The facade inscriptions are what make this palace interesting. On Palazzo Bocchi, the frieze above the large ashlars has two texts: a Hebrew verse from the Old Testament, “Yahweh, deliver me from lying lips and a deceitful tongue,” and a Latin line from Horace’s First Epistle, “You will be king, they say, if you act righteously.” Unlike the other writing on the facade, these two inscriptions were a deliberate, veiled challenge to the Church or the Inquisition during the Renaissance.

Built between 1545 and 1565 by Jacopo Barozzi and Sebastiano Serlio, Palazzo Bocchi is a Renaissance palace named for the historian Achille Bocchi, also known as (Il Vignola). There are Hebrew inscriptions on its facade.

In the Hebrew text to the left of the palace, the final word doesn’t mean “Lord,” which would be g'ֶentleman in Hebrew. It says Yahweh or Jehovah, written Yahweh.
