Our two apartments had kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and sitting areas that were all gorgeous, with full internet included. Each one looked out over an endless valley view. We stayed in September of 2022, and the setting in this small medieval village with three streets was remarkable. It felt uncrowded, completely untouristed, and utterly authentic, while offering a kind of rustic luxury beyond what we expected. The owner is involved in the family business, which has turned many homes in the medieval village into livable rooms and apartments. The family also runs a terrific restaurant in the lower valley, less than a kilometer or two away. It serves gourmet dinners and is where breakfast is served in the morning.

We’d be very happy to come back to Borgo Lizori. It’s a charming stay in a beautifully preserved medieval village, and one of the owners gave us such a warm, friendly welcome. The Il Gallo d'Oro restaurant is inside the village and serves quality food with attentive service from a young, professional couple. Breakfast is at a café just outside the walls, also run by the owners, with plenty to choose from and friendly staff. Next door, their other restaurant serves excellent food and good wine in a pleasant setting. Eating by the fireplace made it even more special.

If you’re passing through on a Sunday, this makes a nice little stop. The village is so picturesque, especially on a fine day, and there are small workshops used as wool mills that you can visit for free. There are several trattorias, though we went to a small farm with a hanging garden that makes its own cheeses and cured meats. Fattoria Montepuro had superb turmeric cheese. A little farther down, a tiny chocolate shop serves coffee with chocolate in it. Visiting this small village, with currents flowing through it, is a lovely way to start dreaming.

The roads are narrow, bumpy, and steep, making the property hard to reach, and the price is exorbitant for what is literally a dump. Inside the room, there were WORMS AND MOUSE DROPPING (see photo), and the furniture was old and dilapidated. Breakfast was terrible, served at a bar a 5-minute drive away. Avoid.
