La Casa in Campagna

We spent ten days at this excellent agriturismo and were treated warmly and cordially. The local food was high quality, and the hosts were exceptional, always helpful and honest. Its secluded setting is truly out in the countryside. It’s a good choice if you want a friendly, quiet experience of country life. The amenities are modest, in keeping with the place, and a long way from the high-tech options you’d find in the city. If you’re after a holiday in the lush Molise countryside, you’ll be happy here.

A quiet place out in the countryside, with a reasonably comfortable room, air conditioning, and a bathroom, though no TV. The hosts were lovely and drove us to and from the port of Termoli for our ferry to the Tremiti Islands for €20. The hostess is an exquisite cook. The road was the one downside. It wasn’t well maintained, and after heavy rain it was muddy and partly flooded. We got stuck on our motorcycles.

The food was good, but the evening dragged on, especially with kids. We had dinner with live music, which was nice, though a little too loud. The staff seemed rather serious and not very relaxed, and service felt disorganized: they tried to serve all the tables at once and left them half-finished. The waiters wore masks but no aprons. The adults' fixed menu was €28 and included cured meats, peppers and cheeses, tagliatelle with ragù, cavatelli with speck and zucchini, mixed grill, fruit salad and a scoop of ice cream. The children's meal was mozzarella with a slice of ham, pennette with sauce, and a cutlet with chips, but no fruit or ice cream. The kids were supposed to watch us adults eat dessert? Absolutely not. We ordered another scoop from the menu. We also paid separately for Coke, which wasn't on the menu. We only wanted water and no wine, but nobody offered Coke as an alternative. How can a children's menu have no dessert? It's a quiet, isolated spot out in the countryside, so the evening was relaxing in that sense.

The owner was so friendly and helpful. I stayed three nights with breakfast and dinner included, and got to try traditional food from the region as well as some dishes that were new to me. I'd recommend stopping by this little pearl of Molise.
