Castello di Bossi

The room mix-up at check-in set the tone for a really disappointing stay at Castello di Bossi. We were first given the wrong room. Only after we questioned it did they admit the mistake and move us, calling the new room their “biggest.” Later they described it as an “upgrade,” but it felt like they were trying to cover for the reservation error. The room was dirty, the windows were fogged, and there was no view of the hills or vineyards as advertised. The bathroom sink was clogged, the door handle came off in our hands, and the shower leaked onto the floor. The windows were rotten and moldy and badly needed replacing. In general, the property needs a lot of maintenance. We chose the place partly because it advertised an in-room washer, which mattered to us as a traveling family. There wasn’t one in the apartment. Instead, guests share a washer that was dirty, broken, and unhygienic. The pool also seemed neglected. We never saw it cleaned during our stay, and there were leaves, dead bugs, and broken or missing tiles. Furniture and other areas showed the same lack of upkeep. After the booking mistake and our clear dissatisfaction, we were offered a “traditional Italian breakfast” for all four of us and two glasses of wine to taste one night in the tasting room. When I later contacted them about the problems and asked for a partial refund, I was shocked to find those “gestures” itemized with prices, as if they were doing us a favor worth charging for. We’ve stayed at other agriturismi in the region with beautiful, well-kept grounds. Castello di Bossi has a long way to go to meet the standard it claims to offer, especially at the price of a high-end hotel without matching service, cleanliness, or upkeep. I do NOT recommend it. Edit: management replied, and I was shocked that rather than acknowledge the issues, they blamed me for “threatening them with a negative review to get a refund”. Wow!

The wine is incredible, the staff are great, and the lodging feels intimate. It’s a charming, quiet place in the middle of Tuscany, with vineyards nearby and a scenic old Italian feel. Just know the villas are spread out. If you want to stay in the main building, you may need to request it. Otherwise, it can take a few minutes to drive to the main castle.

The wines at Castello di Bossi were truly exceptional, rich and elegant, with plenty of character. Each bottle seemed to tell a story of tradition and passion. The estate itself is a beautiful, peaceful escape in the Tuscan countryside, surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards. We loved exploring the area by bike, taking winding country roads and cypress-lined paths with panoramic views. It’s a wonderful retreat, especially for anyone who loves wine.

The only thing that went wrong was the weather, and I doubt they could do much about it. An intense thunderstorm rolled in just before the ceremony. As the Italian saying goes, “sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata”, wet bride, lucky bride! We were there for a family wedding and loved it. Castello di Bossi’s main centre has beautiful views over the rolling Tuscan hills, the food and wine were brilliant, and the staff went above and beyond.
