It was good.

The staff were very friendly, though there were few of them for such a large hotel and grounds that need attention. During my week there, I got the impression that people managing the place weren't actually on site and were trying to cut costs. The neglect shows everywhere, and there's no property manager present. The setting is gorgeous, tucked into a park and pine forest, and the place looks fabulous. It could be a dream resort, but it's in disrepair. The bar doesn't work, and the restaurant serves repetitive food of poor quality and quantity. Don't book half board, especially with fantastic restaurants just a short walk away. Breakfast was truly sad, mostly frozen croissants and a few other supermarket items, with little care or imagination. None of this feels like a four-star resort. The advertised spa is just one hot tub, and even that didn't seem very clean. There's no sauna or Turkish bath, and the rooms and grounds need maintenance too. The whole stay felt like a rip-off for the money paid.

The town is beautiful and medieval, and the property is in a great location with a lot of potential. It's a shame it feels so dated and badly in need of renovation. My room was small and needed plenty of maintenance: old blankets, including a wool one that wasn't vacuum packed and felt unhygienic, broken handles, a shower door that wouldn't close, and dirty curtains. The staff I met were kind and helpful, but the spa was poorly maintained and short on helpful staff. The bathrobe and slippers were beyond comment. Breakfast could be better too, the pastries were dry. I don't understand what qualifies this as four stars. I'd wanted to visit for about two years after receiving repeated offers, so I was very disappointed. I won't comment further on the spa.

The staff were fantastic, professional, and helpful, and the facility itself was well maintained. But details you'd expect a four-star hotel with a spa to get right were missing. There was no relaxation area in the spa, which should have loungers, and mold in the corners of the large spa tub is inconceivable. It's a very beautiful place, but in my opinion it isn't managed exceptionally well.
