I’m lucky to live near Florence in Tuscany, but after spending a few days at I casali del Moraiolo in Collazzone, Umbria, I can see why someone might want to move here. The vivid green countryside, hilltop hamlets, and local specialties really tempted me. The artistically renovated country houses have a warm, comfortable feel, and because they sit high up, the many windows look over rolling hills and medieval towns in the distance. Floriana was an incredibly welcoming host. Her enthusiasm and love for this country home made us feel at home straight away, and she seems to have thought of everything, from cooking classes and trips to nearby towns and wineries to a private wellness center with a sauna, jacuzzi, and the option of a relaxing massage. We explored with Floriana, who knows everyone and everything in the area. We visited Todi, Montefalco, Perugia, and Deruta, where we saw an amazing ceramic business and its charming owner explained how an artistic piece is made. We also had a sophisticated Sagrantino tasting in the Montefalco countryside, and Floriana took us to a wonderful historic trattoria in Todi. Its outdoor terrace had spectacular views, and the traditional Umbrian food was delicious. My one regret is that I didn't bring my art supplies. I could easily have spent the whole time painting among the olive groves, lavender, and wisteria, with birdsong all around.
