The broad staircase in front of the Palazzo del Capitano is a popular place to meet and spend time. From there, the stone building makes a striking backdrop for the cafes lining the south side of Piazza della Repubblica. It has two attractive archways, one central and another off to the side. The Palazzo del Capitano dominates this medieval square in the heart of Cortona. It was built in the 13th century as both a home and administrative headquarters for the city's "Capitano"; the belltower came later, in the 15th century.

A lovely medieval palace, and it has a tower.

From this little square, and it really is tiny, you can reach Cortona's lovely narrow lanes, with their restaurants, cafés, and different kinds of shops. There are a few shops and cafés right on the square too. The internet signal kept cutting out here and often showed no service, though it got better as we walked farther into town.
