Rosengarten

We spent three weeks in Europe, and this town was our favorite by far. The guesthouse is in a great spot, and we loved both the breakfast and the quaint rooms. We were so happy with our stay. You'll be happy here too!

The mountain views were spectacular, and my newly renovated room was clean and comfortable, with a great bed. I had a really lovely time at Hotel Rosengarten, where the friendly staff made me feel welcome. Breakfast was a highlight: plenty of variety, and everything tasted fresh. Dinner was delicious, with good-quality, healthy food. I had a very positive stay and would happily come back.

I rarely leave reviews, but this experience made me feel I had to. We booked dinner specifically for the lamb main course, apparently because they have lamb grazing in the backyard. We cut part of our day trip short to make it back for the 8pm kitchen closing time. The staff kindly made an exception and seated us at 8:10, which we genuinely appreciated. At 8:30, two other guests arrived. Our starters had already been cleared and our lamb was about to come, when the waitress casually told us they had run out. Just two minutes earlier, we'd watched those same late-arriving guests receive lamb. We were left wondering what the reservation had meant, and why they got the same dish after arriving later. At checkout, we told the manager how disappointed we were. He tore up the bill in front of us and snapped, “so you want another price?” We weren't trying to haggle or get a discount. We wanted a basic explanation, some dignity, and, if warranted, an apology. After we pressed him, he gave a reluctant, almost transactional “sorry,” as though saying the word should end the conversation. Then he shrugged dismissively and said, “It happens, maybe I shouldn’t have made an exception for you at 8:10pm.” He seemed proud of the conclusion he'd reached and said his solution was to stop making exceptions. There was no acknowledgment that the problem was running out of a reserved dish while serving later guests beside us. No accountability. The manager treated our disappointment as if we were the problem. The views and food are good, and most of the staff are warm. But this kind of response from management can spoil an otherwise pleasant stay. Plenty of places have good scenery and hospitality, so I'd look elsewhere to keep your vacation mood intact.

The room was okay, but the restaurant was horrible. This was the worst experience I've ever had. We booked lamb ribs in advance and even gave up the sunset to get back by 8pm, since we were told the kitchen closed then. The table next to us arrived at 8:30 just fine, though. After three starters, we were casually told the lamb was gone. There was no real apology or accountability, and the waiter acted as if offering a substitute was doing us a favour. We came for the lamb, so we skipped the main course entirely. Great dinner, really. When I asked at reception how a pre-confirmed dish could disappear, the man said “I don’t know” with no remorse, then asked if I'd ever worked in hospitality, as if running a three-waiter restaurant was too complicated for me to understand. He slammed down the bill and asked, “do you want another price?” I wasn't complaining about money. I just wanted a real apology. His “we’re sorry” sounded dripping with sarcasm, like, “there, I said it, what more do you want?” That made it ten times worse than saying nothing. His big solution for next time was to close at 7pm so they wouldn't run out of food. Brilliant. I hardly ever write reviews, but I don't want anyone else to waste an evening here. If you expect a booking to mean something, or to be treated like a person when something goes wrong, look elsewhere.
