Le Due Spade is part of Fidenza’s history, with the hotel dating back to 1902. It was clean, comfortable and tidy, and my one-night stay was a great experience. Rita, the owner, was funny, friendly and kind, and went out of her way to make guests feel welcome. Her son Marcello was just as welcoming. I don’t understand the bad reviews.

The hot water was a real letdown. After a long day hiking, we wanted a proper hot shower, but the water never got past lukewarm at best. Wi-Fi was also weak in the lobby and didn’t work in our room. The hotel is older and quirky, but in a great spot near the train station and main square. The elderly couple running it were very sweet, and clearly fond of red. Our room was reasonably spacious, with a comfortable bed, an armoire with drawers, a small desk, and useful charging options by the bed. The shower was larger than most we’ve had in Italy, shower gel was provided, and the towels were new and soft. After we chatted with the male proprietor about our Via Francigena pilgrimage, he offered us two bottles of water. He spoke quite good English. Breakfast was mostly sweet things, with brioche, yogurt, bananas, apples and basic cereal. The cappuccino was pretty good. If you’re stuck for somewhere to stay, Due Spade will do, but we wouldn’t recommend it as our first choice in Fidenza.
