Fregene is a lovely area by the beach, though most of the beach is private and, in our opinion, quite expensive. The free section is only a five-minute walk away. We liked going early or in the evening to avoid the strongest sun, since there are no umbrellas there. Bring a parasol to Rome. At night some stretches are quiet and nice for a romantic walk, while the bars and parties make other parts lively if that’s your thing. There are also activities nearby, like the dinosaur park and adventure park. Public transport to Rome and the airport is very poor, and we spent a lot on Uber. If you’re on a tight budget, travelling into central Rome will be costly. Our room was very clean and modern, with charming sea-themed touches. The air conditioning was excellent and essential in the extreme heat, which we weren’t used to. The bed was comfortable, the pillows were soft, and we really appreciated the large mirror. The bathroom was clean and spacious, although the shower head was small. One drawback was the doors, which weren’t soundproof. We could hear other guests and were sometimes woken up. It’s a big house with people coming and going, so noise carries. Soundproofing might help in the future. Giorgio, our host, was wonderful: kind, helpful, and full of useful tips on places to see and ways to get around. He also provided bikes. I’d recommend “simply supermarket,” a 3 km bike ride away, for cheaper lunches or even dinners. Breakfast was self-service from 7am, with croissants, cereal, tea and coffee, yogurt, juice, jam, Nutella, and small packaged sweets. It was tasty and filling, and in the heat we didn’t need a big breakfast. - Vin and Tessa.
