Hotel De La Ville

The building's historic character gave our stay a distinctive feel, and the hotel is right in the city center, close to the main shopping streets. After sightseeing, we found the spacious, clean, well-kept room comfortable to return to. Breakfast had a good range of choices, and the staff were consistently friendly, professional, and ready to help. It was a very enjoyable stay in Florence, and I'd recommend the hotel.

I used to stay here on my business trips to Italy a few times a year, and earlier visits had gone fine. This time was a nightmare. Heavy rain got through the aging building, flooding the lobby and knocking out the electricity. My room had no lights, heat, or hot water in January, and water leaking into it ruined my belongings. They moved me to a much smaller room on another floor. It was colder and still had no heat, hot water, or power, though at least it wasn't leaking there. The hotel has ignored repeated emails to the same address I used before arrival. I asked for a partial refund for my damaged clothes and the night in an uninhabitable room. It seems they think tourists won't come back and don't merit a reply. Despite my history there, they have taken no responsibility. Everything apparently seems fine only while nothing goes wrong, then they disappear. It worries me to think how they'd respond to something more serious, like theft. If you stay, you're on your own. Don't risk it, stay elsewhere.

The room looked out over the rooftops and was spacious and quiet. Hotel de la Ville has an elegant interior with a hint of classic Roman style, and we were met with warm, attentive service as soon as we arrived. Though it's a splurge, the setting is hard to beat: the Spanish Steps are only steps away, yet the hotel still feels peaceful and tucked away. A special stay in Rome.
