Porta Romana is a beautifully preserved, imposing gate in Florence’s historic city walls. Built in 1326 as part of the medieval defenses, it’s the largest gate in the old walls. The road through it once led toward Rome, giving it the name “Porta Romana” (Roman Gate). Inside is a 16th-century statue of the Virgin and Child.

There isn’t a lot to see, and there are tourists everywhere. It gets even busier as you get closer to the arno river. This gate matters to the city’s history, so it’s worth a visit if you’re interested in architecture like this, but Florence has much better places to spend your time.

It looks massive against the blue sky and marks an entrance to Florence’s Old town. Passing through the Roman gates can take you into the Boboli Gardens.

There are lots of bus stops and restaurants nearby, and Carrefour makes it easy to pick up food and other things. The apartment I rented was an easy walk away.
