The New Sacristy by Michelangelo is breathtaking, and Brunelleschi's elegant interior makes San Lorenzo a must-see in Florence. It's quieter than the Duomo, so you can take in the art in a more peaceful, moving setting. A real step into history.
Basilica di San Lorenzo feels like pure Renaissance elegance. I visited in 2022, and the calm, powerful atmosphere inside really impressed me. From outside, the church looks surprisingly plain, but the balanced proportions, light, and clean lines are beautiful once you're in. The Medici Chapels add a strong sense of history and importance. A meaningful stop in Florence, and one I'd happily visit again.
Inside the Basilica you'll find Renaissance sculptures, art, and tombs belonging to the Medici family. The unfinished front is striking too: it's the rear wall of the marble facade that was never added. It's a peaceful hidden gem amid one of Florence's busy commercial streets.
After seeing Siena Cathedral, I couldn't help comparing the two, and this church felt disappointing. It's a simple, modest place, and to me there wasn't much to see. I wouldn't say it's worth going out of your way for.
We ran out of time before we could see inside, unfortunately, but the exterior looks beautiful. The Basilica is right beside Cappelle Medicee, so it's convenient to visit both together.
