The Chapel of the Princes is the real showstopper. Upstairs, the huge domed room is covered in colorful marble, semi-precious stones, and fine inlay work. It’s hard not to think about the Medici family’s wealth and influence when every surface seems meant to impress. The New Sacristy offers a very different mood, with Michelangelo’s architecture and sculpture, elegant marble figures, and tomb monuments in a space that feels both artistic and thoughtful. The Medici Chapels are easy to underestimate at first. From outside and on the ground floor, the complex looks fairly modest compared with what’s inside. We were also fascinated by the small Secret Room, found during restoration work in 1975. It had been hidden beneath the chapels for centuries, and its walls have charcoal sketches attributed to Michelangelo, a rare glimpse of how he worked. For us, this was far more than a burial place. It brings together art, architecture, power, and history. If you’re in Florence, take time to see the family behind so much of the city’s Renaissance legacy, as well as the Duomo. These unassuming walls hold a lot more than you might expect.
Visited Monday, March 2nd, 2026. Adult admission was 11 EUR. It wasn’t very crowded, so there was no need to buy tickets ahead of time. The chapel looks stunning as soon as you walk in. One staff member told me not to use my camera flash even though I wasn’t using it, lol.
In the New Sacristy, Michelangelo’s sculptures of Day and Night, Dawn and Dusk feel full of life and tension. Their faces, poses, and unfinished details made me think about time and immortality. I stood there for ages, caught up in the way the architecture and sculpture work together, with soft light and shifting shadows shaping the mood. The space has a kind of spiritual quiet that stayed with me. The Chapel of the Princes has a completely different impact. Its vast dome and rich marble, including semi-precious stones, feel bold and almost theatrical. It reflects how strongly the Medici family wanted to be remembered. Across both spaces, I felt an intense mix of beauty, silence, and human ambition. This isn’t just a chapel, it’s a statement about power, memory, and eternity. I left feeling humbled and deeply impressed. The place raises big questions about power, time, and legacy, and it helped me feel the emotional depth behind Florence’s beauty. If you visit, give yourself time to look slowly, especially in the New Sacristy, where details reveal themselves gradually. Reading a little about Michelangelo and the Medici family beforehand helps, and an earlier visit may be calmer. The quiet is part of the experience.
There are two levels to explore. Downstairs, we saw relics of various saints and the Medici family tree. Upstairs are the New Sacristy, the grand Chapel of Princes with its dukes’ sarcophagi and wall inlay, plus two more rooms of saintly relics. The hidden room can also be reached from this level, but it needs an extra ticket. We arrived on Sunday after 12 noon and there was no queue. We’d thought our niece could enter free because we saw online that admission was free for under-18s, but that only applies to European residents.
We got in on a weekday morning without buying tickets in advance. Just keep in mind that the secret rooms where Michelangelo hid are separate and need to be booked weeks ahead. The Medici family tombs are incredible marble works, and there are also large-scale pieces by Michelangelo in the adjoining Sacristy. Capelle Medici sits within the “other dome,” which resembles the Duomo, next to San Lorenzo church. The colors and types of marble are fascinating and beautiful. It’s hard to put into words.
