The mattresses had mites, and that made my holiday a nightmare. I raised it with the staff, but nobody offered to replace the mattress or even vacuum it. I ended up buying acaricide spray myself and cycling to a pharmacy in Gallipoli, where I also got antihistamines and ointments. I took antibiotics too. I’d kept coming back for five years, booking the same two-room apartment in Baia Verde, rented by CarlinoTourist and part of the Risberg Hotel, which belongs to the same owner. I had a romantic reason for sticking with it. The apartment was spacious and airy, with decent basics, though it was too basic for my taste. Poor cleaning and maintenance were already problems, and rates kept rising. This year the deposit doubled. I put up with it until this happened. I’ve decided I won’t return. Maybe younger guests, too dulled by alcohol to notice the mites, will take my place. Monica at reception always seemed embarrassed and sorry about what I was dealing with, and when we said goodbye she promised, “I promise we’ll change your mattress next year.” That was simply too much, and still too little.
