Villa Calcinaia gave us a wonderful welcome to Italy. Paola and Fabrizio hosted us graciously, and Paola made Villa I Cipressi, a converted barn on her family’s property, our home for a week. This had long been a second home for my boyfriend on his yearly trips to Florence and Tuscany, and for my first visit he wanted me to have a truly romantic, authentic Tuscan experience. He was right. From Lastra a Signa, the drive up the hill took us past rolling olive groves, vineyards, cypress trees, mimosa, umbrella pines, and a stone-lined road. The view felt like the Tuscany I’d always imagined. Then the gate opened, and a cypress-lined drive led to the beautiful homestead, tucked among olive trees. Paola’s care went with us everywhere: she shared recommendations, tips, and kind wishes, with real interest in making our stay memorable. It was a lovely balance of privacy and personal guidance, and you could tell how much she loves her home and Tuscan roots. The location is convenient too, just moments from the village of Lastra a Signa, 15 minutes from central Florence, and minutes from the train and Autostrada/Superstrada. That made nearby Tuscan towns and cities such as Pienza, Montepulciano, Sienna, and Lucca easy to reach. Villa Calcinaia is a wonderful place to stay while exploring Tuscany, whether it’s your first visit or you keep getting called back. The region’s history, architecture, people, food, and wine made memories and friendships we’ll keep for a lifetime.
