5 Santa Marta

From the outside, Emilio’s little church looks like it dates back to the 17th century. It was closed when I arrived, so I could only admire it from outdoors. I hope I get to see it open another time and see this political figure again.

We stumbled upon the Church of Santa Marta while heading to a restaurant one evening, when music from the organ drew us inside. The organist was practicing for a concert later that night, so we sat and listened while taking in the frescoes and artwork. We came back for the free concert, and the church was packed. The acoustics and the singer’s voice carried the beautiful religious melodies wonderfully. It became a lovely travel memory. The church is in Lecco’s historic district, close to the lake.

Tucked along one of the historic centre’s narrow streets, this little church feels like an architectural gem. It’s a small place, but gathering there to pray can be quite moving.

Inside, the Church of Santa Marta has sacred artworks, frescoes, and richly decorated altars, including paintings of Saint Martha and other religious subjects. Its architecture is fascinating, with a façade that mixes Gothic and Baroque details. This is an elegant Catholic place of worship in Lecco’s historic centre, with ancient roots and a long history. It serves the local community and gives visitors a chance to appreciate the area’s religious art and architecture. Peaceful and evocative, it reflects Lecco’s deep religious history.
