HLL Hotel Lungolago Lecco

The photos on Booking bore little resemblance to the flat, and the receptionist seemed aware of that but didn't appear to care. The place looked as if someone had rushed out and left it behind. It sits beside the main road, and the windows let in all the traffic noise. Inside, there were broken lights and a mirror, dust on the floor, dirty walls, a loud air conditioner, and ceilings coming down. There were ants in the living room and broken wine glasses, too. Check-in service was obnoxious, and on our last day the lift was out of order.

We had a comfortable room and a lovely balcony, though the lake view we paid extra for was partly blocked by the trees in front. It's a short walk into town, and the route beside the lake is beautiful. The staff were helpful. Breakfast was simple, but the baked goods were delicious and well worth trying.

I didn't stay overnight, but I had a fantastic lunch here with my tour group of more than 60 people. We were a lot to handle, yet the staff served us with patience and real care. I'm vegetarian, and one gentleman took the time to ask whether dairy and fish were okay for me. After travelling from Bosnia to Italy, I was used to being given cheese and bread or steamed vegetables when meals were covered by the tour. This was easily the best lunch of the whole trip. They brought me a fresh mixed green salad to dress with olive oil and balsamic, burrata on the side (my favorite cheese!), and plenty of bread. While the others had seafood risotto for the last course, I got an incredible mushroom risotto. The meal and the view of Lake Como across the street were both wonderful. 10/10, and a shout-out to the kitchen staff for making such a delicious vegetarian meal!

The breakfasts were amazing, and I'd know where to stay if I come back to Lecco. The hotel is close to the centre, with rooms that look out toward the lake, even if trees get in the way. I'd say it's one of the really good hotels in the area.
