Grand Hotel Palace

I needed a place to get some work done urgently while on holiday with my family, and found this beautiful hotel. The pool is available for €15 per person, while the lobby and internet are free, which worked perfectly for us. The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. Big thanks to Sandra at reception for helping us and letting my daughter play the piano. I'll definitely be back.

By the second morning I asked if I could have an egg with breakfast, since nobody had offered one, and they brought me one. There was no bacon, though, and the orange juice came from a bottle in a paper cup. Once the croissants are gone, that's it, so get there early. Other guests were complaining too. The building is handsome, but it looks like it hasn't been renovated in a long time and needs paint throughout. Breakfast felt worse than a 2-star B&B, with cakes and quiches put out again the next day. I felt like the last guest in a hotel that was about to shut down. It may once have been a 5-star place, but the service now feels closer to 2-star. I was so frustrated on the first day that I wanted to leave, but the cancellation policy wouldn't let me. I might have given it 2 stars, but I was too frustrated to do that.

The service, pool, setting, room, and breakfast were all impeccable. It's an elegant, comfortable hotel in a beautiful historic building that's been very well looked after.

The room and bathroom were both spacious and clean. That was the only good part of the stay. The hotel is a long way from the town center, and the surrounding area feels bleak, run-down, and desolate. The nearest grocery store, Sisa, is a minimarket about 1.5 km away, or a 20-minute walk. Getting there means walking beside a busy road near the port with no footpath, which feels dangerous at every step. The ugly road behind the hotel is worth mentioning too. Check-in was extremely quick and dismissive, nothing like what I'd expect from a 5-star hotel. There wasn't even a complimentary bottle of water in the room. Pool towels cost extra, and breakfast didn't meet a 5-star standard either. To me, it feels more like a 3-star hotel in what used to be a 4-star property. It must once have been a grand palace, with its size, front garden, and imposing entrance gate. There's potential here, and I hope this review helps bring about some changes.
