Borgoterra

We had a really enjoyable stay, and the room itself was stunning. It had a strong sense of history, and being right in the center of Martano meant restaurants and cafes were close by. The staff were helpful, and the owners' daughter picked us up at the airport for 60 euros, while a taxi would have cost over 100. She was lovely and chatted with us during the hour-long drive. We were also moved to a larger room at no extra charge. There were a few things that could be better. The shower stayed warm for only about 2-3 minutes before turning cold, and the room fridge didn't keep our vegetables fresh for long or anything frozen in its freezer compartment. The hotel says it offers 24-hour service, but the office was often unattended when we passed in the afternoon or evening. Getting around without transport was tricky. Martano has no transport links, so we'd have needed to walk to the station unless we hired bikes. The nearest one, in Zollino, is an hour and a half away on foot. That was manageable for us, though I can see it wouldn't suit everyone. We asked about renting bikes for a long ride to Otranto, but the mother suggested they might not be suitable and told us to check with her daughter. We never ended up hiring them. They did arrange a spa day for us in Otranto, which was great. We wanted to use the hob in our room's kitchenette, which came with an extra charge. We understood the supplement, but the mother and daughter gave us different prices, 5 euros per day from one and 10 from the other. It also took two days for them to get the hob working. Still, we had a nice time, the room was beautiful, and the staff were very helpful. The shower and fridge were our main issues.

The staff made my wife's birthday feel special without us even asking. They booked us a restaurant they recommended and made a special cake for breakfast. It was one of the highlights of our Puglia trip, and the service was excellent. The rooms are beautiful old spaces, not a modern hotel. Thank you!

The room we were given looked nothing like the photos on the Google reviews. Honestly, this was the worst place I've stayed in Europe. When we arrived, the staff member was on the phone. She saw us but continued talking for about 10 minutes, then spent another 10 minutes chatting with a passerby before dealing with us, even though we were paying guests. She didn't show us to the room, just pointed it out. The in-room guide never mentioned that a switch had to be flipped for hot water. Once we worked that out, the water was still only lukewarm the next day. She also didn't speak English. Breakfast was awful. We should have skipped it. The coffee tasted like instant coffee, and the dishes were just strange. The actual room photos are below, not the images they've posted. Mosquitoes were everywhere and bit us multiple times during the night. Even with the windows open, the room felt dark and miserable. Avoid.
