The spa was one of the nicest I’ve seen, and the hotel’s simple, elegant design made a great impression. Service was superb across the restaurants, spa, front desk, and housekeeping. Pierluca always seemed to be around whenever we needed something, from ice and limes for drinks in our room to help at breakfast and dinner. Matera’s historic district is right there to explore. We had an amazing stay and would happily come back. I highly recommend it.

The breakfasts were good, the staff were nice, and even though we had trouble with hot water and heating in our rooms, we’d still recommend the hotel. Its old town location made Matera easy to explore, with plenty of restaurants nearby. We liked how they’d made a modern hotel out of caves and stone buildings. The spa pool was cool to swim in, though it could use a hot tub. Kids gathering in some of the public walkways near our rooms was a downside. We also enjoyed Matera beyond the old town. We hiked down and across the suspension bridge, then up to some caves. It was beautiful but tough, especially in the rain. We rented a car and drove to Alberobello and Polignano a Mare, and were glad we chose to stay in Matera.

The breakfast was a lovely start to the day, with a thoughtful range of refined local products. And the welcome felt warm and sincere. The team were smiling and attentive, and made a real effort to be available. Staying in ancient caves in the heart of Matera’s old town is a striking experience. The architecture tells its own story, and the setting is soulful and beautiful, far removed from daily life. Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & Spa is a remarkable place, and I’d gladly return. There are a few things that could better match the five-star expectations. Since guests can’t arrive by private car or taxi, it would help to plan transport more proactively. A complimentary shuttle, or more help with luggage, would make a difference. At checkout, I would have appreciated staff taking more interest in onward transport and offering assistance. The lack of a valet, porter, or bell service stood out. The intimate spa is beautifully designed and uses reservations to keep it cosy. My massage was technically good, but the interaction felt limited, from reception to the treatment room. A quick check-in about the room temperature, music, or pressure would have made the treatment feel more personal. The spa atmosphere came across as cold, and not because of the temperature. More attentive conversation could turn a good treatment into a memorable one. With a little more attention to guest care and personalisation, this hotel could reach its full potential.

The spa was incredible. I could have spent the whole day there, though I understand why access is limited to one hour per guest per stay. The old town location was perfect, and the staff were brilliant. Breakfast was fresh, with amazing pastries and good hot dishes cooked to order.

The spa was the real highlight for me, and a great way to relax in the afternoon before heading out for the evening. The rooms were nicely designed with a modern, minimalist touch, and ours had great views of the Sassi of Matera. At check-in, the staff were warm and professional, spoke great English, and made us feel well looked after. I’ll probably stay here whenever I visit Matera. In fact, I’ve already booked for this summer, when I’m bringing my mother-in-law to see Matera for the first time. The location, architecture, and atmosphere made a strong impression too.
