La Chiocciola sui Sassi

We were there the night of April 24-25. The property is beautiful and nicely renovated, though it felt a little cold. Its central location is ideal, and the staff were helpful. They even set aside a parking spot for me, which was a real plus there. Breakfast was a bit lacking, perhaps. Still, I’d recommend it.

The owner made us feel welcome and was very helpful when we arrived. Everything was spotless and had all the comforts, including a kitchenette and coffee pod machine. We spent a weekend there at the end of October, and it was an excellent base for visiting Matera. Sasso Barisano is a two-minute walk away, and the city center is close too.

The location is a major plus, with Sasso Barisano just a minute away on foot, so you can enjoy the Sassi without needing to drive. The owner was kind and helpful, and even let us use his parking spot nearby. We stayed in the ground-floor unit, which is the larger of the two. Both units have a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and a sofa bed for two, with a maximum of four guests each. Upstairs, the kitchen and bedroom share one room. The building is new and the furnishings are pleasant; there’s also internet, a TV, a wall-mounted hairdryer, and an automatic coffee machine. The downside for us was noise from above. We had noisy tenants who were up at night, and could hear them walking around all night. Still, highly recommended, and excellent value for money.

We’ve tried several kinds of tourist accommodation in Matera, but this was our first stay here. These are small apartments with all the comforts, close to the Sassi and the historic center. The rooms were welcoming, very clean, recently renovated, and nicely furnished. The bathroom stood out, with a roomy, practical shower, and the kitchenette had everything needed to make the stay our own. The owner was very friendly and welcoming. There was enough in the apartment for a satisfying breakfast, plus a coupon for one of Matera’s best cafes and pastry shops. Excellent value too.
