Such an amazing place. The room in the rock was stunning, with a spa, and it was spotless and fully equipped. The owners were incredibly kind and helpful. We loved it so much, we’ll be back. Grazie.

Staying in one of the five uniquely designed suites in the historic Unesco part of Matera was a lovely experience. The rooms are cozy and built into caves, and a couple of suites have jacuzzis. The reception staff were wonderful, proud of the property and happy to tell us about the suites’ history.

We were in the family room, which has two levels: the bedroom upstairs, with the bathroom and sitting area below. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and you can get a good breakfast if you preorder when you arrive. The room was comfortable, and my wife especially liked the mattress. The shower worked well. Restaurants are close by, and the place sits above the Sassi, so expect a trot down and back when you go to see the sights.

We stayed in cave room #9, and it was huge, with a separate entry area, bathroom, eating area, bedroom, and jacuzzi room with beach laying chairs. The Jacuzzi was about the size of a small pool. The cave walls felt authentic, but the room still had modern conveniences. Breakfast was served in the room at the agreed time, with local savory and sweet pastries. The staff were very nice and accommodating, and let us check in early, which was helpful since there’s so much to see in Matera. We’re very active and spent the whole day seeing most of the city, though not all of it. I’d suggest at least 2 days if you’re active, or 3 if you’re not, so there’s time to enjoy the cave hotel too. Having the Jacuzzi after all that walking was great. The location is central, near lots of important sights in different directions, but expect steep uphill and downhill walks, getting lost, and circling around. Google Maps doesn’t handle different levels of the mountains well, and can make places look close when they aren’t. Sometimes a gate, construction, or private property blocks a route, so you have to go around. We had to circle to reach the B&b too, though you get used to it. There’s a garage with cheap parking, 1 euro, about 5-7 minutes on foot from the hotel.
