It’s a historic place to stay and close to the old town, which might make it suitable for a single night. But we thought it had air conditioning, and it turned out there was only a draw fan bringing outside air into the room. That wasn’t great in weather over 30 degrees. The walls were damp, and the shower squealed when we used it.

Giuseppe and his daughter were warm and helpful, and patiently answered all our questions. The location is excellent, right in the Sassi and just a few minutes on foot from the main Piazza and the main sights. Staying in a cave room is a one-of-a-kind experience, and free entry to the museum is included. It’s a must-see while you’re in Matera. If you get the room nearest the musuem entrance, look out for the fossils! Some humidity comes with staying in a cave, though, so hooks or rails for towels would be useful.

You’re staying beneath a medieval stone church, in a room carved into the rock. It stays cool even when it’s scorching outside, and in a minute you can be in the middle of a fantasy-like medieval town. Parking is the main hassle if you have a car. For better-priced food, you have to leave the old city completely, or you’ll pay high prices.

Giuseppe was a great host, and the cave room was spotless and comfortable. It’s a unique place to stay, and the price was excellent. I slept really well.

The room is a basement cave, which made for a unique stay, and the rate was a good deal. It’s also at the edge of the “stone city area,” so getting there with luggage was easy.
