Mahara Hotel & Wellness

The location by the beautiful scenic walkway was great, though the usable beach was a long walk away. The hotel really didn’t feel like 4 stars, maybe a low 3 or even a 2. The room photos online were misleading and didn’t show how the rooms actually looked: old and in need of renovation. The food was inedible, there was only one outlet in the whole room that worked with a converter, and the WiFi was horrible.

The setting was beautiful, and the staff were so helpful. We were there just one night with a tour group, but it felt lovely. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was an excellent three courses. I felt like a princess :)

The location was good and breakfast was okay, but the hotel itself fell well short of four stars, maybe a low three at best. It looks older than the photos suggest, with dark, worn corridors and basic rooms. We could only use one of the power outlets, and the others wouldn't accept the same plug. The WiFi was slow and unreliable, towels hanging on balconies made the place look shabby, the water feature wasn't working, and the pool area was tiny. We also waited two hours to check in because of a laundry problem. No compensation was offered, and there was nowhere to sit or go while we waited.

The central location was a real plus, close to the promenade, restaurants, cafés, and walking routes. The room cleaning team was professional and kept things very clean, which made the week-long stay more bearable. We also appreciated the welcome voucher for juice or Prosecco. We were in town for dear friends' wedding and had added a short holiday, but there were many problems. We booked a room advertised with both sea view and balcony, then learned on arrival that it was one or the other. Apparently rooms with both didn't exist, though work was going on on the third floor. The WiFi was extremely weak. I had an online conference to present at, and reception said there wasn't any room or spot with stronger internet, despite the hotel presenting itself as a “Congress center” 🤡 The website and booking page listed a gym and wellness spa club. The gym was available for an extra 10€ per day, while the spa was under reconstruction for an unknown length of time. Guests should be told in advance. We also ordered laundry and ironing for my husband's suit for the wedding. Reception seemed doubtful they could do it, but they took it, ironed it, and stained it. I then asked for an iron to fix my dress myself and found it, and the ironing board, incredibly rusty and old. Breakfast was the same very limited selection each day. No fresh fruit except apples, which was odd in summer, and the scrambled eggs and bacon looked so bad I didn't even want to try them. The pool itself was okay, but the loungers and chairs were tired and dirty. There were only three ruined umbrellas, and the space for sunbeds was very limited despite the pool being fairly spacious. The lift was old and noisy, and I couldn't find a maintenance certificate inside. One day it stopped working, then they put it back into use without any change in its condition. Staff were very poor at communicating with guests and mostly spoke to each other. When we complained about construction noise above us at 6:20 AM, we were told there couldn't be any work happening. Either the person thought we had all imagined it during our six-night stay, it was her first day, or both. On our final morning we asked whether we could have lunch at the hotel before our flight so we could rest, but when we came back they were closed. The hotel departments clearly hadn't communicated. I wouldn't recommend staying here.
