We paid online in full before arriving in Milan, but the staff member asked for another tax payment, over 70 euros, and insisted on cash. What tax rate is that, 40%? It felt like a scam. We booked through Expedia, but this turned out to be a run-down room managed like an AirBnB. The room quality was poor, the bathroom leaked, and we could hear other renters talking at night. I'm also not sure this place should be called a hotel, and it wasn't ADA compliant. If I could give it zero or negative stars, I would.
I was very, very disappointed. The apartment was neglected and in unacceptable condition: mold all over the bathroom, an old shower, no bath mat, and just one small bedsheet even though we booked for two. Under the roof, the air was unbearably dry and smelled so bad it was difficult to breathe. I had health problems the next morning, and with so little insulation we heard every noise from the corridor. It felt deeply disrespectful to rent out such an old, poorly kept flat just to make money without providing basic comfort or hygiene, even if it's a family business. They also require city tax in cash, and charge an extra fee if you pay by card. That seems illegal to me, and there was no advance warning that we'd need cash. For the price compared with what they offer, this shouldn't even be legal. I wish I could warn more people about this flat.
We had a lovely time in Milan and liked the apartment, but the end of our stay was a nightmare. He'd agreed on a pickup time for our bags in the baggage room, but didn't show up then or answer his phone. He arrived half an hour late, and we missed our train to the airport. We had to run and could easily have missed our flight too. Even so, he insisted we pay the full €15, saying it wasn't his fault because his phone was charging and he couldn't leave home. He was rude after we'd been waiting so long. During the stay he also sent several texts, including some at 11:30pm, telling us how beautiful we were. Maybe he didn't mean anything creepy by it, but as three young women travelling together, we felt uncomfortable.
You can't beat the location, just a minute from the Duomo, and the room was clean with a huge bathroom. It was good value too. But the bag pickup was a mess. After checking out, I asked on WhatsApp if we could collect our bags at a certain time. The host said yes and told me to message when we were outside. We did, then waited half an hour without any contact. He said his phone was charging and he hadn't seen the messages, even though we'd agreed on the time. Our passports were in the bags, and we missed the airport train and nearly missed our flight home. When he arrived, he tried to laugh it off, then still charged us the €15 bag drop fee for leaving them in what was basically a dusty airing cupboard. We argued, but he wouldn't budge, and we had to run for the plane. We also got two late evening messages calling us beautiful. They may have been meant kindly, but as three girls staying in an apartment they manage, we felt uncomfortable. Good value, but don't leave your bags there. Some of this was really unprofessional.
The house is in an amazing location, and I loved the interior design. The staff are attentive and take care of any problems. Definitely a place to visit!
