Hotel Morfeo Milano

I never believed the rumor that Italians are racist toward non-white people, but this stay made me feel I witnessed it myself. At check-in, the staff member working on Saturday 20th September gave me an annoyed stare and didn't return my greeting. They asked for identification. I said I had both a German ID and passport, but they insisted on the passport. I didn't mind at first and thought perhaps it was Italian law. Later, when I came down to report that the room safe didn't work, a white German couple checked in. The staff were suddenly smiling and polite, and accepted their IDs without asking questions. When I challenged the difference in front of them, the staff member first acted as if he didn't know what I meant, then said he hadn't known I had an ID, and then claimed, “we thought you are a foreigner and didn’t know you had a European identification.” I had clearly said I had an ID. It felt like he was lying to save face in front of the couple. The broken safe was another long ordeal. I had valuables I wanted secured, but after I reported it, they made me wait an hour and sent someone to fix it. That didn't work. After two hours, they still couldn't fix it and told me to carry my valuables with me. I refused and asked to move rooms, but they said none were available and I should put up with it for a day. I kept arguing and asked them either to store my things in the reception safe and give me a note taking responsibility, or to refund my reservation. Only then did they find a spare room where everything worked. I checked in sometime after 15:00 and couldn't leave until after 19:00. That wasted my whole evening and plans for the day. To non-white guests, I strongly recommend choosing a different hotel.
