The hotel's location is outstanding: halfway between the Duomo and Santa Marie Della Grazie, and less than a 10-minute walk from Cadorna train station. Gay Odin, a fabulous chocolate shop, is a few minutes away, with the amazing shoe shop Guja right by it. It doesn't get much better for location, and I'll definitely stay here again. I love quirky older hotels when the service is great, and Hotel Vecchia was exactly that. The staff were helpful and so friendly, really five-star in that way. They fixed my travel dates easily and got me into a room straight away. They spoke perfect English, and I can't thank them enough. The room was quiet and comfortable, with a soft, cosy bed. I also liked the granite tops on the desk and luggage rack, the beautiful hardwood floors, and having an elevator so I didn't need to haul my bags. Breakfast had hard-boiled eggs, pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, and a great cioccolata calda. Such a varied spread was lovely on a cold winter morning.

I couldn’t sleep comfortably in the room, so the very kind, helpful reception staff couldn’t make up for it. The hotel is in an excellent spot, but that’s about the only upside. My room felt damp, was extremely dated and wasn’t clean. I didn’t even feel at ease taking a shower. I wouldn’t stay here again; everything besides the location fell short.

The rooms are plain, but that suits a hotel like this. It feels like the sort of small, independent place that existed before private equity and big hotel groups swallowed them up. The location is great, breakfast is free, and a friendly Italian serves fresh espresso with it. A nice extra.

The bathroom was cramped, and the facilities throughout felt very dated. Bad smells from the bathroom lingered all night, and my nose felt awful when I woke up. Two stars at most.

Mohammed at reception was brilliant and really went out of his way to make the stay pleasant. The hotel is small, but it does the job if you want to be near the city centre.
