On arrival, the room hit me with a strong mouldy smell, and I found it deeply unpleasant. Giovanni can seem pleasant at first, but his replies to negative reviews here and on Air BnB gave me a very different impression. He comes across as self-indulgent and fussy, welcoming only guests who follow his preferences, from check-in times to how they plan their trip and how long they spend at each stop. If you don't enjoy your stay, he responds to criticism with self-righteous remarks and character attacks instead of considering reasonable feedback or accepting that people can experience a holiday differently. Stay here if you like the smell of mould and owners who seem two-faced and whiny. If fresh air, comfortable accommodation, and genuine interactions with decent people matter to you, don't stay here.

The medieval room we stayed in had a pantry and a nice hot shower. The building is Mr. Giovanni’s childhood home, with a long history spanning ancient, medieval, and baroque periods, and the restoration throughout is tasteful. He also showed us the small museum on the premises and gave us a detailed map, along with great restaurant and activity suggestions. Le Case Degli Avi is in Modica Alta, with plenty of lovely baroque sights and excellent restaurants nearby. I had delicious granita and brioche at a café just a few minutes away. Corso Umberto I, the main street with many shops and restaurants, is downhill, so expect a walk back up. One thing to plan for: check-in is only from 5 to 7 pm, probably because Mr Giovanni likes to show guests the museum himself. You may be able to arrange another time with him.

Each room has its own story in this collection of historic houses in Modica Alta's Old Town. The owners have restored them with taste and take pride in making guests feel comfortable. Le Case Degli Avi is a genuinely unique hotel, and a great choice if you'd like to stay somewhere with a sense of history. Thanks for a pleasant stay!

Simona and her father Mario made us feel so welcome. Mario says his family has roots in Modica going back to the pre-Christian era. There's also a small cultural museum beside the accommodation, explaining the history of language, settlement, and conflicts between different groups over the centuries. Our unit, Donna Nina, had gorgeous stone grotto interiors and new fixtures in the ancient building. It came with a small fridge and hotplate, plus a two-person bathtub with a waterfall fixture and a separate shower for quick bathing. The circular stairs up to the tub are steep, while the stairs to the small toilet and shower are a regular short flight. The place is in the heart of old Modica, surrounded by ancient, medieval, and baroque buildings. The town is also known for its modern sweetened chocolate, adapted centuries ago from an unsweetened Aztec recipe.
