Palazzo Viviani Castello di Montegridolfo

There was plenty of outdoor space to walk our dog, and the room was comfortable with a lovely view over the pool. The staff made us feel very welcome during our lovely overnight stay in this stunning spot. Would definitely recommend.

The location was a big part of the experience. Montegridolfo is a peaceful, beautifully restored medieval village on a hillcrest between the Conca and Foglia valleys, near the Emilia-Romagna and Marche border. Its cobbled lanes, old walls, and wide views make it feel like stepping back into history. Palazzo Viviani – Castello di Montegridolfo has plenty of historic character too, with antique pieces in the shared areas, lovely gardens, and care taken over the details. We were travelling with our baby, and from arrival onward we felt well looked after. Reception was warm and professional, but still personal. Our room was spacious and suited us well. The new bathroom stood out, with green marble, modern finishes, and excellent cleanliness. It felt luxurious while still being comfortable. Breakfast was amazing, with freshly made cakes, traditional choices, fruit, and other good quality food. Cristina, who prepared and served it, is a master Chef, and was especially attentive, professional, and kind with our baby. When we got a flat tire, the staff made a stressful situation much easier. Crina and Alessandro helped call a mechanic, drove us there, and arranged things for us. We really appreciated their willingness to help, especially with our baby along. The hotel has beautiful bathrooms, good bedding, free WiFi, a garden, terrace areas, and a seasonal swimming pool. Prices felt fair for the location, service, and comfort, and we thought it was very good value. A couple of practical things: make sure you have clear directions if driving, as some of the historic access roads are narrow. Good walking shoes are useful for the cobbles and uphill streets. If you’re visiting with a baby, ask which room works best for space and easy access, as the staff seem very accommodating. We’d absolutely return. I wholeheartedly recommend Palazzo Viviani to anyone after a peaceful, beautiful retreat with great service.

Urbino and Gradara are both only a short drive away, and we enjoyed a visit to the Montegridolfo museum about local WWII fighting around the "Linea Gotica." The hotel is in a medieval fortified village, with a pool and two good restaurants nearby. The Bistrot was especially excellent. Our family room was spacious and charming, though a little tired. Staff were friendly and helpful, particularly at breakfast, which we enjoyed every morning.

The rooms have a lovely old-fashioned feel, like travelling back in time, and the place really does live up to its name as a castle in the sky. The hotel and restaurant are the best I’ve stayed in anywhere in Italy. Dinner was amazing, everyone was friendly, and the hotel felt out of this world. I hope my photos do it justice.
