Hotel Rifugio Prategiano

The hotel was a welcome cool spot during a hot spell in the surrounding cities, around 25 degrees while we were there. My husband and I spent a long weekend at the end of August. Breakfast was included, and the balcony had a nice view. The Wi-Fi wasn't very good, though it worked a little better when we sat outside in an open area. We tried beginner riding lessons and an outdoor ride, and the horses were friendly and easy to handle. The beginner class really is for absolute beginners. Getting to the cities took at least an hour by car, since the hotel is quite far from them.

We came back after a year, then returned again two years later. The hotel was the same, though prices had risen a little, for example horse lessons cost €30 instead of €25. It's still very good quality, and I highly recommend it. The views are lovely, the Tuscan food feels authentic, and there are plenty of nearby activities like horse riding and cycling. The atmosphere is cozy and family-like.

We were happy with our choice and would gladly recommend the experience to others. A big thank you to everyone at Prategiano. Our family of two adults and two kids spent a week there in July 2021, and we enjoyed the informal, comfortable atmosphere. The pool area is new and very large, the hotel is lovely, and both breakfast and dinner were very good, with a different menu each day. Service was excellent. Our room may not have been the most recently updated, but the apartment was spacious, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room, and well worth what we paid. The setting was a pleasant surprise. Montieri and a few other villages are nearby, though you should expect a drive of over 30 minutes to reach Massa Marittima or somewhere bigger. We liked feeling away from everything, with nature all around. The horse riding, from lessons to excursions, was very well organized and flexible. We could decide the night before what to do the next day. There were several horses, and the multilingual staff were skilled, friendly and professional with riders at every level. The bicycle outings are worth trying too. The equipment was good quality, my bike was brand new, and the guide was friendly and patient.

Seeing Toscana from horseback was the best part of our week at Rifugio Prategiano in September 2008. The horses were calm and surefooted, the guides were fun, and the views were amazing. It's such a different way to experience the region. The hotel is a quaint, house-style place in the hills near Montieri, Italy. Renate & Roberto and their staff were warm, friendly and very accommodating. We had a wonderful time and made good use of the restaurant, pool and hot tub, as well as the lovely surroundings. I'd highly recommend it for anyone wanting to hike, bike or ride horses through Tuscany.
