Club Hotel e Residence La Vela

The rooms are clean, like the rest of the hotel, but feel dated and have few facilities. There are two kinds of electrical socket, neither the standard euro 2 pin type. No drink-making setup either, just a small fridge that didn't seem to work well, if at all. The reception staff were pleasant, though to me it came across as just part of the job. Breakfast had much more choice than the evening meal. I ate breakfast there each morning because there wasn't another option, but after trying dinner the first night, I ate out for the rest of the week.

We had a wonderful holiday with Leger coach tours at the Club Hotel Vela in Torbole. The hotel was spotless and tidy, with attentive, very helpful staff and great amenities. It’s well placed for visiting the many beautiful spots around Lake Garda. Both breakfast and dinner had a fabulous selection of tasty, high-quality food, much of it locally sourced. The electrical socket was the most worrying problem. When I unplugged my phone adapter, the whole socket came out with it, leaving the wiring exposed. The room also felt very dated and not like a four-star hotel. I was given a quilt cover when I asked for a bed sheet, and the shower was tiny, too high to adjust, and hard to use properly even though I’m only 5 feet tall. The hair dryer didn’t work; I reported it, but it wasn’t properly fixed. Breakfast had a fantastic selection until my last morning, when there were broccoli and sprouts instead of mushrooms and apparently nothing left in the kitchen to cook. Dinner offered lamb shanks in gravy or fish curry. I chose Italy to try Italian food, but there was only one Italian dish on the menu during my stay: cold pizza served at breakfast, not dinner.

The hotel itself is in a lovely location, and a few staff members were friendly, but others made us feel like a nuisance. After more than 12 hours on a coach, we were given what they called a buffet: cheese slices and cubes, plus stringy, mostly fatty ham. The cheese wasn’t chilled. There was a tea and coffee machine, but staff told me off for trying to use it, then said I could buy a drink. No water was provided either, and a bottle cost €2.50. Breakfast through the week was poor. The scrambled eggs tasted fishy, the bacon was so overcooked it was inedible, and there was dried cake. One morning they even had green beans and rice as an option. Dinner looked like reheated leftovers, and the soup was like flavored water, when there was enough to go around. Tea or coffee facilities in the room would have helped. If you want to waste your money, book here. Otherwise, stay somewhere else.
