We called several times, but it was always full and never bookable. We wanted somewhere near Notarbartolo station for convenience. Palermo and its local government are organizing an international volleyball tournament these days, and even the one-star guesthouses and dives are full. The Notarbartolo area is now in complete decay, like the rest of Palermo. The city has become the garbage capital, and should be boycotted until Sicily's autonomous local government with a special statute decides to develop a waste management plan. Paper, diapers, spit and food scraps are scattered around these and other neighborhoods. When I first came to Palermo in 1994, the city was a living room, tidy and clean. Its decline has grown more serious over the years. Anyone born today in Palermo and the Notarbartolo neighborhood will grow up thinking it's perfectly normal to live alongside filthy, garbage-filled streets.
