The apartment has potential, and it’s in a central area near Teatro Massimo, but the price didn’t feel right for the quality and service we got. We were also told by phone that parking was available, without being told it was paid. Unauthorized attendants often patrol the lot and ask for an “extra fee.” There were several comfort and cleanliness problems. The apartment had lingering odors and dust throughout. Even after we asked for fresh shower towels, the replacements still smelled unpleasant, and there was food residue in the kitchen, presumably left by previous guests. The air conditioning is only in one room and can’t cool the whole apartment. We couldn’t leave it running while out because its key is attached to the entrance keys. The manager, Sergio, seemed very friendly and helpful at first, but payment was handled in a way we couldn’t trace and no receipt was issued, which left us perplexed. Also, although some websites advertise it as a B&B, breakfast isn’t included, so it’s more like a short-term rental. Unfortunately, our stay was disappointing in several ways.

Good morning, little ones! I’m still digesting everything I ate and tasted in Palermo. Maybe a bit too much by world standards, but the food was spectacular. Before Sicily I thought Apulians were the endless eaters, but now I bow to the Palermitans. I nearly reached forced obesity from all that eating, and thank you for it! The apartment, “i Pupi di Belfiore,” was another highlight. It’s next to the colossal Teatro Massimo and worked for a band like ours, with what we needed, even though there was only one bathroom. With 88 people in there, that was a bit of a downside. From the window you could really take in Sicily’s sounds and scents, from mothers calling their kids in for dinner to the aromas of local delicacies. And the food! I was bursting from how much I ate, as full as an egg, but somehow there was always room for more: Arancine supreme, Sfinci di S.G., Pizzotti (I think that’s what they were called), and Cannoli. In my opinion, the Sfinci is 11 times better, though I’d better say that quietly or my Sicilian brothers and sisters will shoot me in the ear. I also loved the little shops selling beer, run by Bangladeshi, Indian, and Pakistani people who spoke with a Palermitan accent. They’re new regional, maybe even national, heroes, here and in their hometowns. Long live Sicily, the beer from the Strait, spectacular fried fish, and especially arancini with classic ragù. The variations are good, but the original is the original.

We spent five days here, and the owner was kind and helpful throughout. The apartment is very conveniently placed for many tourist sights. It’s on the second floor and there’s no elevator, and breakfast isn’t included. Recommended!
