I found it even more imposing than Milan's Scala. A really interesting thing to do in Palermo, and highly recommended.

The guide wasn’t very good, but I’d still recommend the English tour for 10 Euros to see the lovely interior. It’s a beautiful theatre, and Teatro al Massimo is Italy’s largest and Europe’s third largest.

The rotunda on the south side, also called the Pompeian room, was originally reserved for men. Its unusual acoustics come from a slight asymmetry designed by the architect. Stand right in the center and your voice seems hugely amplified, while the resonance elsewhere is so strong that you can’t make out what’s being said from outside the rotunda. 🤔 Teatro al Massimo, first known as Cineteatro al Massimo, stands in Palermo’s historic center, in the Seralcadio district. It shares a square with Teatro Massimo, which is where its name comes from. Giovan Battista Santangelo, from the Basile school, designed it, and it was completed in 1924. The Biondo family, patrons of the cineteatro and also clients of the theater of the same name, were a bourgeois entrepreneurial family who shaped the city’s social life in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The cineteatro reached its greatest splendor until the second. Its style is Art Nouveau, with clear influences from contemporary European design, especially Parisian. The building has a simple square footprint, an entrance at one corner, and gridded windows along each side. Inside, the audience area has two levels. The upper gallery has a fairly simple arrangement of supporting beams that also recalls Art Nouveau.

I came back after visiting last year, and it’s still a beautiful place. The interior is incredible. It’s the biggest in Italy and third biggest in Europe. You can get a ticket at the desk for a 30-minute tour, with guides speaking different languages.

The tour was really informative, and the place is beautiful.
