Five days before our October visit to Pavia, my wife was injured and we had to return to the US for medical treatment, so I contacted the hotel to cancel. They asked me to send a copy of the booking confirmation, which seemed odd since the hotel should already have the reservation details. I found the email and sent it over anyway. That’s when I learned they considered the booking to be under Flex 7, which meant I’d be charged for both nights because we were inside the seven-day cancellation window. But I had booked the more expensive Standard Flex option, which allowed cancellation one day ahead. The confirmation email showed Flex 7 terms instead. When I raised the mismatch, the hotel said the Flex 7 rate had dropped because of “market demand.” In other words, they said that rate had fallen by 50% in 45 days. I had made the reservation in August for two nights in October. Standard Flex was 332.50 per night, the hotel’s most expensive refundable option. The other refundable choice was Flex 7, priced at 185 for one night and 150 for the other, with cancellation required at least seven days before arrival. My wife and I are in our mid-60s, and when you’re older, paying more for the option to cancel a day ahead can be necessary.

We spent one night in Pavia and were really happy we chose Arnaboldi Palace. The palace has been beautifully renovated, with striking high ceilings and lovely décor, and our room opened onto a fantastic terrace. Breakfast in the wonderful lounge was great, too. It’s right in the center, and we got a very warm welcome when we arrived. They’ve thought of lots of things to make a trip easier. A truly beautiful stay, highly recommended!

The breakfast room is a real highlight, a palatial ballroom inside the palazzo. Our room was large and clean, and the staff were exceptionally helpful. Special thanks to Signore Paolo and Sergio. Arnaboldi Palace is a unique place in the center of the old town, and we could see the Duomo from our window. I’d strongly recommend it to anyone visiting Pavia.

Sergio even arranged for breakfast to be brought to our room on the day we had to leave early for a train. That kind of care was typical of our stay at Arnaboldi Palace. Martina and Sergio in guest services paid close attention to what we needed, and Paolo and Suzannah, the resident “guard” dog, made us feel welcome too. The main dining hall was immaculate, with beautiful terraces looking out over Pavia’s lively streets. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the service was personal and phenomenal. We enjoyed the continental breakfasts, and the evening aperitivo on the outside terrace is well worth having. We were lucky to spend several days there, using the palace as a lovely place to come back to after day trips around Northern Italy. Each evening felt like returning to a home away from home. The building itself is unforgettable.

For a touch of imperial atmosphere, stay at Arnaboldi Palace in Pavia. The antique furniture and décor are beautifully chosen, the food is delicious, the wines exquisite, and the staff friendly. A great place for a stay.
