We’ve spent plenty of time in Italy and have usually felt warmly received, even when we couldn’t communicate easily. This stay was a real disappointment on that front. The place itself is pleasant, with donkeys and other animals that are lovely for a child, and the room and breakfast were good. But we didn’t feel welcome from the start. A baby cot had been set aside for guests arriving two days later. It might have been possible for us to use it for the first two nights, but that wasn’t really offered, apparently because setting it up would take effort. At checkout, after almost two weeks on the road, we were charged €15 because we’d kept groceries in the room’s small fridge or minibar. We hadn’t been told directly that this wasn’t allowed, and no other way to keep the food cool was suggested. The restriction had apparently only been mentioned in Italian. Communication was difficult since we don’t speak Italian and the owner didn’t speak English, which made the whole experience even more frustrating.
