Agriturismo Scannano

We spent four wonderful days here last month and hope to see Barbara and her family again on a future visit to the region. They made us feel at home and were lovely hosts who went out of their way for us. The food was freshly made and delicious, and the spa was terrific. It's peaceful, with a beautiful property among rolling grape vineyards and fantastic views. Just south of Siena, it's also well placed for many of Tuscany's sights, most within an hour's drive.

It was lovely simply wandering the beautiful grounds, seeing the farm animals, chatting with the family, playing with their dogs, and eating delicious home-cooked food. This is a working farm where a real family lives, and that makes it feel much more charming and personal than a hotel. We relaxed here, but also used it for side trips to a thermal spa and nearby Siena. We had plans to visit other places, but ended up staying put because we liked it so much. The spa room is a lovely bonus that's unusual at other agriturismos. Barbara's mother, Marilena, gave me what was probably the best massage I've ever had, and prices are very reasonable. We could do laundry here too, which I appreciated. We came as a couple from California, don't speak Italian, and stayed three or four nights in early June, eating breakfast and dinner here every night. We travel quite a bit and enjoy hotels, but this was a completely different and wonderful experience. This review is overdue, but fully deserved. It was an unforgettable Tuscany stay, thanks to a warm, welcoming family.

Barbara and her family welcomed us warmly and were great hosts. She lives on the property and is always available if you need anything. There are friendly animals around the farm too: we met the family's two sweet dogs and several friendly cats, which was a nice surprise. We stayed for two nights in charming rooms overlooking the heart of Tuscany. The calm, relaxing atmosphere was a lovely break between busier stops on our Italy trip from Florence to Rome. It's also a handy base for nearby towns including Siena, Pienza, Montalcino, and Monticchiello, all within an hour's drive or less. We only wish we'd stayed longer, and hope to return when it's warmer.

The spa room is a real highlight, with a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, and massage room. Barbara has massage diplomas and offers a good range of treatments. The owners are lovely, friendly, and accommodating, so you can ask if you're missing anything. You can arrange breakfast with them, and on Thursdays they serve dinner: typically a bottle of wine, appetizers, pasta for primi, BBQ meat for the main, and homemade dessert. The agroturismo sits in the middle of a winery. The road in is a bit chaotic for a small car, but once you arrive it's very quiet. The town a few minutes away is cute and quiet too. The rooms have good space, WiFi works okay, and there's a fridge and small TV. The owners have two big, very friendly St Bernard dogs and a small cat, useful to know if you have allergies.
