After seven weeks traveling around Italy, this was the home-style trattoria I’d been looking for. The menu is short and simple because everything is homemade, and you can taste the care in the food. Selma welcomed us like family, while her husband quietly and skillfully ran the kitchen. Together they’ve made a special place. We started with the breaded fish, crisp with fresh herbs coming through, and penne with Taleggio. The cheese had a rich, distinct flavor, but the pasta was comforting without feeling heavy. We also shared a mixed salad and half a liter of Soave. The tiramisu was among the best we’ve ever had: thinner, creamier layers that melt in your mouth. Selma makes it herself, and it tastes personal, balanced, and completely addictive. We finished with a little Amaro Montenegro and a small glass of limoncello, already talking about returning. We ran out of time, but this family-owned trattoria left a lasting impression. Warm, genuine, and delicious, it reminded me why Italian food is so loved: it’s made with heart.

We shared an antipasto plate with a nice selection of cold cuts and some really tasty Parmesan. For the mains, I had the slow-roasted pork knuckle with roast potatoes, and Gill chose the lasagne. Both were very good. It was a lovely dinner, with very friendly service and the feel of a real Italian family restaurant. By the time we left, the place had got quite busy, and nobody offered us dessert. Luckily, there’s always a gelato shop nearby in Riva, so it wasn’t a problem. The tables for two are lined up very close together, and a bit more space would have made the meal better for us. If that doesn’t bother you, it’s definitely worth a visit.

We’ve traveled around Europe for years, always seeking out authentic local places to eat, and this is definitely one of them. It’s been a family-run Trattoria for over 30 years, with fresh ingredients cooked by a chef rather than reheated in a microwave. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the chef and staff at work. We ordered pasta, which was perfectly al dente, and the antipasti are great too.

The staff at La Montanara were so kind and welcoming, and made the place feel warm and friendly. I had a delicious, smooth, rich cappuccino that was perfectly made. A charming little spot in Riva del Garda, and one I’d highly recommend if you’re in the area.
